3 Killed in Fresh Violence In Manipur, Attackers Breached ‘Buffer Zone’

Two men, father and son, and another person at the adjoining house, were killed in the firing. They were unarmed villagers guarding their houses.

Guwahati: Witness accounts from locals reported that fresh violence in Manipur’s Bishnupur district early this morning resulted in the killing of three unarmed villagers, including a father-son duo. Suspected militants raided Ukha Tampak village near Kwakta in Bishnupur around 2 am and started firing indiscriminately, police sources said.

The firing killed two men, a father and son, along with another person at the adjoining house. They were unarmed villagers guarding their houses.

According to the police, the attackers came from Churachandpur and gunned down the three while they were sleeping. Later, the attackers slashed them with swords, as reported on Saturday morning.

The Manipur Police on Friday said joint forces conducted search operations in vulnerable and fringe areas of the strife-torn state and destroyed seven illegal bunkers after fresh violence broke out across various districts.

Late on Thursday, in an exchange of fire between unidentified gunmen and state forces at Terakhongsangbi in Bishnupur, a 35-year-old woman sustained injuries.

The woman, identified as Aribam Wahida Bibi, suffered a bullet injury on her hand, and she has been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Imphal, he said.

Earlier the same day, a mob looted the armoury at the headquarters of the 2nd India Reserve Battalion (IRB) located at Naranseina in Bishnupur district, officials said.

Mobs ransacked at least two security posts in the district on Thursday, resulting in the killing of a police officer in Imphal West and the looting of arms and ammunition, including automatic guns, in Bishnupur.

An unknown sniper shot a Manipur police personnel in the head, resulting in their death in Senjam Chirang, Imphal West. Suspected militants opened fire from nearby hill ranges in Koutruk and Senjam Chirang, resulting in a gun battle that also injured a village volunteer.

Later in the day, clashes led to the injury of over 25 people in Kangvai and Phougakchao areas in Bishnupur. Army and RAF personnel employed tear gas shells to disperse processions heading towards a proposed burial site, violating restrictions on gatherings.

The Kuki-Zomi organization, Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, had planned to bury 35 people, who were killed in ethnic riots in the state, at a site in Haolai Khopi village of Churachandpur, resulting in tension in many districts.
