Bella Thorne Said She and Zendaya Were “Pitted Against” Each Other During “Shake It Up”
“She’s getting the recognition she deserves,” Bella said. “That just makes me so happy.”
Bella Thorne is opening up about what it was like to be “pitted against” Zendaya when the pair worked on Disney Channel’s Shake It Up together in the early 2010s — and how that treatment affected the friendship she and Zendaya were trying to form.
In a new interview with US Weekly, the star admitted that the two former Shake It Up stars weren’t initially friends when the series began filming in 2010, and one meeting eventually changed all that. Pointing to past interviews on the subject, Bella told US Weekly, “It took us those other two seasons of becoming so close. [It was hard] not having someone pitted against you [before] and then all of a sudden, now everyone is pitting you against each other. That fed into our heads. It made us not [be] friends in that first season.”
The dynamics of their relationship only changed when the two starred together in an episode of Disney’s Good Luck Charlie. Bella shared that the pair had a “beautiful talk,” saying, “We were really able to put our cards out on the table and understanding each other.” Bella has previously discussed how Hollywood’s habit of pitting women against one another led to an initially contentious relationship with Zendaya. As US Weekly notes, Bella said in a 2017 interview that the two were “forced to compete” on Shake It Up.
As for the status of their current friendship, Bella told US Weekly that she’s more than happy to continue supporting Zendaya. “She’s always been amazing and she’s always going to be amazing. I’m just happy that people see that. She’s getting the recognition she deserves. That just makes me so happy.”
Although the Disney Channel series has long since ended, it appears as though Bella and Zendaya do remain friends. Zendaya previously told Seventeen that the two are aware of the attention paid to their relationship, particularly when it comes to social media interactions, and they instead choose more private means of communicating. “We’ll post things to each other on social media, but we know everybody’s looking at that. So, if she wants to talk, she’ll call me or text me,” she said.
