Chhapaak to Brahmastra: 20 Bollywood films to watch in 2020
“Clear your calendar and make room for these 20 films to watch in 2020.”
The year 2020 is a great year at the movies. We have some of the biggest, and most-promising films scheduled for a release. Which also means some excellent performances. And let’s face it, after the 19 worst films we had to endure in 2019, we deserve some good cinema.
We’ve listed 20 films to watch in 2020 – and belives us, we actually had to cut it down from 30! Maybe in another decade, right?
Chhapaak
The year begins with the most-anticipated film of the year – the Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey-starrer Chhapaak. The first-look, teaser and the trailer of the film have given us enough impetus to pre-book for this one. We hope it’s the same with you.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior
Clashing with Chhapaak is Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif Ali Khan’s historical drama. Given how Panipat dampened our excitement last year, we’re actually in two minds about this one. Even if we wait out the first week until the reviews come in, we will definitely catch it in the second week.
Street Dancer 3D
Honestly, we just want this film to deliver one thing and one thing alone – some serious dance numbers. We’re baning on Varun Dhawan and Nora Fatehi to do that, not at all on Shraddha Kapoor (for anything actually).
Panga
Starring Kangana Ranaut, Neena Gupta and Richa Chadha, Panga is the story of a female hockey player making a comeback into the sport post-marriage. The film promises a good story and some even better performances.
Aaj Kal – (Untitled Imtiaz Ali’s next)
If it is Imtiaz Ali, we are interested. Then, if it brings (rumoured, they reportedly dated and broke up, but are still seen together so go figure) couple Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, we’re even more interested.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan
Ayushmann Khurrana is in love with Jitendra Kumar. From erectile dysfunction to now homosexuality, the Shubh Mangal franchise has leapt into another touchy topic. Naturally, we’re pre-booking.
Janhvi Kapoor takes on a very ambitious biopic of the first female (along with Srividya Rajan) Indian Air Force combat pilot. Neerja, another biopic turned her cousin, Sonam Kapoor’s life around. Could Gunjan Saxena do the same for Janhvi?
Rohit Shetty expands his cop-verse with Akshay Kumar in the titular role this time. Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham (from Singham) and Ranveer Singh as Sangram Bhalerao (from Simmba) will have a cameo. Apart from that, Katrina Kaif and Akshay’s hit jodi returns with Sooryavanshi.
India’s historic Cricket World Cup victory, under Kapil Dev’s expert captaincy, is a moment every Indian is proud of. In Kabir Khan’s 83, Ranveer Singh will be seen as Kapil, while Deepika Padukone will essay the role of his wife, Romi Dev. If you’ve seen Ranveer replicate Kapil’s Natraj shot, you know why this film is one to watch out for.
Roohi Afzana If Stree is your kind of a film, Roohi Afzana is too. Starring Rajkummar Rao (who else for a horror-comedy, right?) and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead, and Pankaj Tripathi and Varun Sharma in supporting roles, Roohi Afzana, originally Roohi Afza, is set to release in April.
Amitabh Bachchan’s look from Gulabo Sitabo almost broke the internet. This Shoojit Sircar directorial brings Big B and Ayushmann Khurrana together for the first time. But if the star-cast isn’t enough, catch it for its quirky storyline.
David Dhawan re-presents his 1995-hit, the Govinda and Karisma Kapoor-starrer of the same name, this time with Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the lead. We’re going to watch simply to compare notes, and if the new cast managed to match up to Govinda and Karisma’s energy.
Shakuntala Devi Based on the life of the math genius, Shakuntala Devi stars Vidya Balan in the lead. We should rest our case here.
Akshay Kumar is a man possessed by a transgender person’s ghost in Laxmmi Bomb. Yup, its comedy, adapted from the Tamil film, Kanchana. Now, who wouldn’t want to watch this?
Radhe Salman Khan’s last offering, Dabangg 3, wasn’t really bang-for-the-buck. Which is why a lot is riding on Radhe. But your Most Wanted Bhai has a problem – Radhe will be clashing with Akshay’s Laxmmi Bomb.
After all that we’ve read and seen of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, that we’ll land up for the first day first show of Brahmastra is a given. And if that’s not exciting enough, consider that Ayan Mukerji returns to the director’s chair after a very long hiatus, and Amitabh Bachchan and Ranbir come together for the first time.
Sardar Udham Singh In Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham Singh, National Award-winning actor Vicky Kaushal will return as the assassin who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. If you have seen the film stills released online, you will surely not be able to skip it.
Another Akshay Kumar biggie, Prithiviraj will see the Good Newwz actor in the role of Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan. This will be his first historical drama and a biopic of sorts.
Laal Singh Chaddha You’ve watched Tom Hanks’s Forrest Gump. You’ve watched Salman Khan’s Bharat. Now watch Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha just so you could compare notes.
Clashing with Aamir Khan at the box office is Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey. We promise you this is Akshay’s last release of the year – simply because there no more Fridays left!
